Montana LeafTravel Guide To Glacier National Park in Montana USA

The "Big Sky Country", how is nicknamed the state of Montana, is located in the western part of the United States and is considered one of the best vacation spots for nature lovers. The state comprises numerous mountain ranges that belong to the Rocky Mountains and as result it has the third lowest population density in the USA. People travel to this part of North America drawn by a few great natural attractions such as Montana Glacier National Park, the Battle of Little Bighorn historical site, and the Yellowstone National Park. Along with it, there are several ski resorts (very serios competitors for those from Canada) where millions of tourists go for winter sports or just to relax in comfortable hotels and vacation rental properties.

The Glacier National Park is one of the most beautiful places on Earth due to the multitude of natural wonders! The park is crossed by two mountain ranges (forested on large areas) that contain around 130 named lakes (and other roughly 600 unnamed!), 200 impressive waterfalls, over 1,000 different species of plants, and even more species of animals! Holiday makers can enjoy pristine nature on large territories because this park is continued over the Canadian border by the Waterton Lakes National Park, making up together the Waterton-Glacier International Peace Park. Even if this state is very rugged, there are settled a few historical hotels and cabins that welcome in the peak seasons a huge number of tourists, both in summer and in winter. Hotels in Montana have a rustic charm, still it offer comfortable lodging, stylish decorated rooms, great amenities and are served by very helpful staffs.

The beauty of the mountain lakes in The Big Sky Country is breathtaking and therefore it's understandable why it are top travel destinations in the state! Most of them have been formed by the glacial activity and the largest of them are Lake McDonald and St. Mary Lake, both being located in large valleys surrounded by lofty rocky mountains with thick forests on their slopes. The richness of wildlife is also amazing in the entire region and for this reason even the official symbol of Montana Glacier National Park is an animal, the majestic mountain goat, that can be seen rarely at distance, usually jumping on steep rocks! Along with the mountain goat, in forest and waters of park live black bear, grizzly bear, Canadian lynx, the very rare wolverine, bighorn sheep, elk, moose, mule deer, white-tailed deer, coyote, the mountain lion (also very rare), numerous bird species (over 260!) and 23 species of fish such as the endangered bull trout, cutthroat trout, northern pike, mountain whitefish, Kokanee salmon, grayling and the lake trout.

The name of the park comes from the fact that the geology of the entire region was formed by immense glaciers during the last ice age, over 15,000 years ago. Today only 27 glaciers are still present in the park, from which some of the most interesting are the Grinnell Glacier and the Jackson Glaciers. Unfortunately, most glaciers are in danger to disappear in the coming decades due to the global warming!

Hotels in Montana are usually crowded year-round because there can be practiced numerous summer and winter activities. Tourists can see stunningly beautiful sights during scenic train tours, take lake cruises (available just on several larger lakes) on historic wooden boats, enjoy great hiking on 700 miles (1,127 kilometers) of trails, experience some of the best fly fishing in North America and practice plenty of winter sports like snowmobile riding (it is illegal on the park's territory, but permitted in other areas), cross-country skiing, mountain skiing, and others.
