Montana is located in the western part of United States of America, one third of its surface being covered completely by mountain ranges interrupted only by large valleys and belonging to the western side of Rocky Mountains. However, there are also other mountainous areas in the central region. Because of these geographical attributes, but also due to the varied relief, Montana has more climatic areas and the weather characteristics are different in its regions. The climate in the western half is specific to mountainous zones (warm sunny summers and cold winters with a lot of snow), while eastern Montana has a semi-arid continental climate. Another formation that influences seriously the weather in Montana is the Continental Divide, which is running north-south through the western mountainous half and restricts the flow of warmer air coming from the Pacific Ocean towards east, while the cooler and drier continental air cannot move towards west.
Temperatures vary pretty much between seasons and between the different regions of Montana. The average daytime temperature is 28 degrees Fahrenheit (-2 degrees Celsius) in January and 84,5 degrees Fahrenheit (29,2 degrees Celsius) in July, with hot weather occurring mostly in the eastern plains. The most precipitation fall in the western part, where the mountain ranges can accumulate over 300 inches (7,600 millimeters) of snow during winter. Generally, Montana is a rugged land where is wise to wear clothes in layers because in the same day can occur appreciable variations of the air temperature and can snow even in the middle of summer! Because the eastern part features torrid summer days, there are forming generally two tornadoes per year and several storms.
