Located along the Montana-Idaho border, Powder Mountain is nicknamed the Rocky Mountains' hidden jewel and is definitely one Alpine ski area winter sports enthusiasts will not want to miss! The resort has been in operation for over sixty years and every year since it is opening, the snow comes and there is a lot of it! The resort is located atop the Continental Divide and is operated through a special-use permit by both the "Bitterroot National Forest" and the "Salmon National Forest" that means skier can enjoy the beautiful, serene type of environment that is usually not reserved for ski resorts. Because the resort is family-owned, visitors receive high quality, friendly customer service from the time they book their visit to the time they arrive and all throughout their stay. Ski patrol is also very helpful and well trained and is there to assist skier on the slopes. In fact, everyone in the staff is helpful and accommodating and all visitors are made to feel at home at Powder Mountain.
As if the scenery, low lift prices and great customer service are not enough to ensure a great day of skiing, there is one other thing that draws people from all over to ski at Powder Mountain. Snow - lots of snow! An annual average snowfall of three-hundred inches is enough to keep this mountain in the business of snow sports from December into late spring. The skiing itself is fantastic with over 1,800 acres of terrain for winter sports, more than 30 marked trails on two mountains, and an elevation of 7,800 feet with a vertical drop of 1,800 feet. Most of the trails in Powder Mountain Ski Resort are for intermediate skier, but there are some for beginners and advanced sportsman and the longest trail runs for 2.5 miles. The lifts consist of five double chairs and three rope tows. Although crowded slopes are something skier rarely encounter at Powder Mountain, it is still nice to know that they have a lift capacity of nine-hundred skier per hour! Is there anything for cross-country skier and snowboarders? Yes, of course there is! There are 30 miles of groomed cross-country trails, there is a rail park, and a half pipe for snowboarders who are also welcome to snowboard on the ski trails as well.
A lodge where visitors can sit next to a fire and enjoy a cup of coffee or hot chocolate serves the Powder Mountain Ski Resort, but if they are looking for a place to stay the night, there are some great accommodations in close proximity to the ski area. There is a variety of hotels and other lodgings to suit any taste and all are quite affordable. The Sula Country Store Resort is thirteen miles away and offers cabins and cottages. A Li'l Bit of Heaven offers log cabins with full kitchens and is only eight miles away. Lost Trail Hot Springs has a restaurant, bar, Jacuzzi and sauna, and is located even closer to the ski area at only six miles away. The Riverhouse is a beautifully decorated inn surrounded by spectacular views. However, these are just a few of the many places one can stay at while in vacation in this ski resort. Some are located a bit further away while others are closer together, but all have a variety of amenities and services to suit any of tourists needs!
Powder Mountain & Lost Trail Ski Resort is typically open four days a week from Thursday to Sunday and has extended hours during holidays. It is one of the most appreciated ski resorts in Montana and is not hard to find, being located a very short distance off Highway 93 headed south. There are plenty of hotels for all pockets, so everyone can find with ease a hotel room or ski chalet in accordance with the personal vacation budget. The drive to the ski destination is just as scenic as the views from atop the ski hills with stunning views of the Bitterroot Mountains on all sides!
